Solar power was the fastest-growing source of new energy worldwide last year, outstripping the growth in all other forms of power generation for the first time and leading experts to hail a “new era”. Renewable energy accounted for two-thirds of new power added to the world’s grids in 2016, the International Energy Agency said, but the group found solar was the technology that shone brightest. New solar capacity even overtook the net growth in coal, previously the biggest new source of power generation. The shift was driven by falling prices and government policies, particularly in China, which accounted for almost half the solar panels installed. The amount of renewable energy capacity forecast globally in 2022 has been revised upwards on last year’s forecast, driven by the IEA expecting a third more solar in China and India.
The development of solar technology nearly doubled in the United Kingdom in last year (2017) with a total of 710,000 new installations. This includes fitting new solar panels in solar farms, workplaces, and homes. In fact, the UK recently reached the 1 million home milestone. Additionally, research shows that the United Kingdom is supplying solar panels at a faster rate as compared to any other country in Europe. Solar panels are used in churches, schools, train and police stations, farms, and bridges. The government is supplying more panels to schools than any other public sector organisation. In 2020 there will be about two million solar panels in homes, 24,000 in commercial roof-tops, and 2,000 in solar farms. In fact, the Guardian newspaper cites the view of Analysts at Aurora Energy Research, stating that by 2050 summers may be completely powered by solar energy.
